Hostels: focus on the growing trend in resorts
Connected, community-based and trendy, hostels are coming to the resorts. Busting out the image of youth hostels with their wooden beds and old-fashioned curtains, they are shaking up the accommodation on offer with their urban fantasy, cool spirit and low prices. Here’s a closer look at a concept that’s gaining ground in ski resorts.
A food truck in the kitchen. A harmony of mismatched sofas. Yoga classes before breakfast. Veggie, gluten-free and often organic dishes… Codes and references that appeal to a young, connected clientele, whose budget is often as tight as a pair of skinny jeans. These are the hostels, auberges, 3 or even 4.0 that are proliferating in the trendy districts of major cities, but now also at altitude. The proof is in the form of 4 establishments in resorts and 2 new openings.
View of the Mont Blanc glaciers
Rocky Pop in Les Houches
In the heart of Les Houches, facing Mont Blanc, it’s impossible to miss the brightly lit front of the Rocky Pop Hôtel.
Stepping through the door is a bit like entering a film set, or a teenager’s bedroom that’s grown up. Some will be lounging on the stylish sofas, others will be competing at table football, while the calm can be found in the ‘Banquise’ relaxation area, where you can check your emails or read a book in a Japanese atmosphere.
Whether you’re with a group or on your own, happy hour in the cocktail bar means you can get to know your room-mates and sip your mojito with a view of the Mont Blanc glaciers.
A lively place with a relaxed atmosphere
Le 1861 Châtel Hostel in Châtel
From the outside, Le 1861 in Châtel is a huge wooden chalet on the side of a small mountain road. A youth hostel in the Alps, rather classic and basic… until an explosion of colour seizes the newcomer as soon as he steps through the door.
Everything has been refurbished to bring a bit of pizzazz to this place surrounded by fir trees and snow-capped peaks. Lemon yellow in the kitchen, electric blue or fuchsia pink in the bedrooms, bright red in the bar… It’s a real eye-catcher, and you’ll feel right at home in this colourful, relaxed atmosphere.
The large sofas covered in animal skins in the relaxation area are perfect for après-ski snacks before extending the evening with a collective raclette or a Mario Kart tournament.
Workshop trend
The Moontain Hostel in Oz-en-Oisans
Located in Oz en Oisans, in the heart of the Alpe d’Huez ski area, the Moontain Hostel brings together travellers with a taste for meetings, action and the outdoors.
The rooms, for 2 to 12 people, have a workshop feel, with plywood and large numbers along the doors. The dormitories have black curtains to ensure privacy, while the industrial lockers make it easy to store personal belongings.
Every week, activities and events are organised to help you discover the area and get your adrenaline flowing!
Urban decor, cosy atmosphere
HO36, the 3 Valleys hostel
The concept is already a big hit in Lyon, where the HO36 establishments have been open on the Guillotière side since 2016 and on the Opéra side since September 2017.
Last winter, the latest addition to the family arrived in Les Menuires, right in the heart of the 3 Valleys. Just like its two big brothers, this latest addition is no exception to the house style: urban decor, cosy atmosphere and guaranteed low prices. Homemade dishes and fresh produce on the restaurant menu, and cool evenings sipping cocktails and beers in the chill-out room.
A trendy, connected hostel for all generations.
A concept on the rise in resorts
Two new openings in December 2018
In December 2018, two new hostels will open in the Alps. In Les 2 Alpes, France Hostel will open “The People Hostel”, a 364-bed establishment. In La Plagne, HO36 will open its second high-altitude establishment this winter. Located in Plagne Centre, this atypical hostel with its stylish, quirky decor will offer a relaxed atmosphere with spacious living areas, a bar and a restaurant.
Hostel - Youth hostel revamped? Low-cost hotel? Marketing stunt?
Low prices, dormitories, à la carte services, young clientele… So what makes hostels unique in the rental accommodation market? Above all, their atmosphere.
Friendly, communal and connected, with a programme of events and games to encourage people to meet and talk.
Then there’s the decor. Resolutely modern, trendy and urban, with modular, multi-purpose spaces, a mix of materials and colours, and a sophisticated layout.
And finally, access to comfort, even at low prices. Intimacy is preserved in the dormitories thanks to clever layouts, with the possibility of eating at almost any time, depending on your diet, and quiet areas for organising work sessions.
