Mountain safety
Whether in winter on the ski slopes or in summer on the hiking trails, safety in the mountains is paramount. France Montagnes guides you with essential advice to make the most of your holiday in complete peace of mind.
Winter safety: on the ski slopes
- Check the weather conditions: before setting off, check the weather forecasts and avalanche warnings. Conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.
- Respect the rules of the slopes: familiarise yourself with the safety rules on the slopes, in particular the right of way and danger zones.
- Equip yourself correctly: wear suitable equipment, including a helmet, waterproof clothing and warm layers. Make sure your equipment is in good condition.
- Never ski alone: ski in a group and inform someone of your itinerary. In the event of a problem, it’s always better to have companions.
- Plan your route: study your route before setting off and tell someone your plan. Stay on the marked paths and avoid straying off them to minimise the risk of falling or becoming disorientated.
- Keep an eye on the weather: as in winter, the weather can change rapidly. In the event of a storm or adverse conditions, don’t hesitate to turn back. Before setting off, check the weather applications and use the webcams.
- Equip yourself wisely: wear appropriate hiking boots, and take water, snacks and a first-aid kit with you. Don’t underestimate the importance of sun cream and a hat.
Once you’re there, there are a few good practices to follow:
- Share your itinerary or position and tell someone you trust that you are leaving. In the event of a problem, this will make it easier for help to arrive.
- Ask the professionals in the resort for information: they know the area you’re in best and will be able to tell you where you need to be on your guard, as well as giving you a few tips on how to make the most of the best spots!
- Take breaks and respect your limits: because the pleasure of the mountains in summer comes before the quest for performance, you can try to outdo yourself and get the most out of it, but first listen to your body! The mountains are for everyone and at all levels
The mountains offer unforgettable experiences, but safety must always be your priority. Whether you’re skiing or hiking, follow these tips to make the most of your holiday in complete peace of mind.
